Mountain gorilla and infant. Mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei) stay with their mothers for several years after birth. Breeding does not begin until the age of 10 for females and about 15 for males. Their slow reproductive rate has increased the impact of habitat destruction, poaching and war on their populations, making them highly endangered. Mountain gorillas are found on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes between Rwanda,Uganda and Zaire. Their diet consists mainly of roots, leaves and stems. They can reach over 2 metres in height.
