Orang-utans. Historical artwork of two orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus),one holding a stick, the other a carrot and some fruit. Orang-utans are normally solitary animals. Although their name originated from the Malay meaning "forest-man",they are the most distantly related great ape to man. The orang-utan is the only truly arboreal (tree- dwelling) great ape and is also the largest tree- dwelling mammal. Long arms, great strength and grasping feet make them well adapted for living and moving around in trees. This illustration is taken from a book published in 1778 | |
