Nineteenth century engraving of the Orang-utan,Pongo pygmaeus. Of all the great apes, the orang- utan is the most distantly related to man. Yet its name originated from Malay meaning "forest-man". The face of the orang-utan has been described as "very human". It is the only true arboreal (tree- dwelling) great ape. One species exists in Sumatra and Borneo in the jungle forest. Long arms, great strength, and grasping feet adapt it for a life in trees where movement is by swinging. The fur is a reddish-brown. It has a mild-natured manner; its infants are born helpless; and its intelligent behaviour has been exploited for our amusement. In the wild the orang-utan may soon become extinct | |
