Ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) and baby. The mother is rubbing the scent glands at the base of her tail against a tree trunk to mark the boundary of her territory. The ring-tailed lemur is endemic to Madagascar,where it inhabits scrub and forest. Unlike other lemur species,the ring- tailed lemur spends a lot of time on the ground. Females give birth to 1 baby after a gestation period of around 135 days. The baby is carried on the stomach for the first 3 weeks and after that the back. The ring-tailed lemur mainly eats fruits,leaves and flowers. It is a social animal living in matriarchal groups of up to 30 individuals. Photographed at Berenty Reserve,Madagascar | |
