Mareeba rock-wallaby (Petrogale mareeba) joey in its mother's pouch. This species of rock-wallaby is found in northern Queensland,Australia. It is nocturnal, but is more active just before sunrise and sunset. It inhabits rocky, rugged terrain. The population of this species is in decline, but conservation breeding programmes to prevent extinction are underway. Diseases such as toxoplasmosis and hydatidosis and the destruction of natural habitat are considered to be partially responsible for the decline in numbers. This animal is also easy prey for many predators. Photographed in Australia | |
