Magpie shrike (Corvinella melanoleuca) perching in a tree. Also known as the long-tailed shrike, this bird is distinguished by its long tail, used by the male to impress females during courtship and also to warn competitors off a territory. It inhabits open,semi-arid woodland and scrub in eastern and southern Africa from Kenya to Mozambique. Unusually social for a shrike,it is often to be seen in noisy groups of up to 12 individuals. This bird feeds on insects and small reptiles, perching at the top of trees and bushes and dropping down to seize its prey. Photographed in the Kruger National Park,South Africa | |
