Red-billed hornbill (Tockus erythrorhynchus) perching on a branch. Red-billed hornbills are a common resident breeder in much of sub-Saharan Africa. The female will block herself and her eggs in a tree hole leaving only enough room for the male to pass food through. When the female and chicks are too big to fit in the hole together, the female breaks out and rebuilds the wall. Both parents then feed the chicks. Red-billed hornbills are large birds,at 42 centimetres in length, but are among the smaller hornbills. They are omnivorous, feeding mainly on the ground and taking insects, fruit and seeds.
