Red-winged parrot. Museum specimen of a male red- winged parrot (Aprosmictus erythropterus) as seen in ultraviolet (UV) light. This species is native to Australia and Papua New Guinea. Both genders have red wings and a bright green body. The male bird has a blue patch on its back that shows strong UV reflectivity (white) when viewed using a camera adapted to filter through and detect only UV light waves. Areas with less UV-reflectivity appear dark blue to black. Birds are able to see normal colours and UV parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. This allows them to view markings that are invisible to human eyes. (See image Z860/061 for parrot viewed in normal light) | |
