Horned puffin. View of a horned puffin (Fratercula corniculata) perched on a rocky ledge above the sea. These puffins inhabit the North Pacific Ocean, from Alaska round to Japan. They spend the majority of their lives at sea, returning to land only to lay their eggs. Horned puffins typically find crannies and natural rock tunnels in cliffs rather than build a nest. Puffins are strong swimmers, and chase fish through the water with a powerful flying action. The large,brightly- coloured bill is used in displays during the breeding season. Horned puffins typically reach about 30-40 centimetres in length at maturity. Photographed in the Pribilof Islands,Alaska,USA | |
