Curlew (Numenius arquata) on grass. The curlew is the largest and one of the most widespread of the curlews, breeding across temperate Europe and Asia, and wintering in Africa, southern Europe and south Asia. Curlews feed on mud or very soft ground, searching for worms and other invertebrates with their long bills. They will also take crabs and similar items. Curlews are a member of the family Scolopacidae which includes sandpipers and snipes. Different lengths of bills enable the different species to feed in the same habitat without direct competition for food. Photographed in Kent,UK,in January | |
