Pied avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta). Pied avocets are large wader and migratory birds whose breeding habitat is in shallow, brackish waters. They migrate to Africa or southern Asia in winter and feed on crustaceans and insects. This species became extinct in Great Britain in the 19th Century but was successfully re-colonised in the 1940's. For this reason it became the logo for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Photographed in October,in Kent,UK | |
