Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea). This seabird breeds in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Europe,Asia and North America. At the onset of the Arctic winter it performs the longest migration of any known animal, flying approximately 19,000 km to the oceans around the Antarctic, and as a result sees more daylight than any other creature. Arctic terns are 33-36 cm long and have mostly grey plumage with a black nape and crown. They feed on small fish and crustaceans. Photographed in Northumberland,England | |
