Herring gull. Historical artwork of a herring gull (Larus argentatus) on a beach. This large gull is found throughout the northern hemisphere, although it never ventures far out to sea. Birds in the northernmost part of the range tend to migrate south for the winter. It feeds on practically anything edible it finds, and as a scavenger it has established itself in urban areas, where it feeds on refuse. It also hunts small mammals. It can attain a wingspan of up to a metre. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860- 1935) | |
