Ruff. Historical artwork of a male ruff (Philomachus pugnax),a wading bird. Only the male has the prominent collar of display feathers that gives this bird its name. The feathers are used in displays at a lek,an area where males gather to compete against each other for females. The ruff is a migrant, and spends the breeding season in moist grasslands in northern Europe and Eurasia. In the winter it heads south to wetlands in southern Europe,Africa and parts of southern Asia. It feeds on insects, frogs and small fish, with some plant matter as well. It may reach over 30 centimetres in length. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935) | |
