Water dikkops. Adult water dikkop (Burhinus vermiculatus) sitting with its sleeping chick. Water dikkop females lay 2 large, nearly oval- shaped eggs in a nest on the ground. These birds belong to the stone curlew family, whose members are nocturnal, possessing large,amber-coloured eyes which provide them with good night vision. Water dikkops inhabit stony wastelands in tropical Africa, both the male and the female having a yellow-brown plumage which camouflages them effectively in their habitat. They feed mainly on beetles and worms, but their diet may also include frogs and mice. Photographed in the Paarl Bird Sanctuary,South Africa | |
