Wattled crane (Grus carunculatus). Largest and most rare of the cranes in Africa. It stands 1.5 metres tall. G. carunculatus inhabits permanent wetlands and feeds on aquatic vegetation and insects. The function of the wattle,which hangs beneath its chin is not known. Breeding pairs maintain territories and site their nests at least 500 metres away from other nests.
