Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiacus) mother and young. This bird, actually a shelduck and not a true goose, typically lays 6-10 eggs. The young become independent after about 70 days, and are looked after by the mother until then. This bird is found around water, but also spends much of its time ashore, mostly eating plants and insects. It may reach a length of around 70 centimetres. The Egyptian goose is found in the Nile Valley and in sub-Saharan Africa. Photographed on a lawn in Cape Town,South Africa | |
