Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiacus) suffering from botulism. The Egyptian goose is found in abundance around the Nile valley and sub-Saharan Africa. It is an excellent swimmer but spends the majority of its time on land, often foraging for food (plants and occasionally insects) at great distance from water. Botulism is caused by the botulinum exotoxin secreted by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The toxin affects the nerves, leading to paralysis and often death. Avian botulism is a common disease,it is thought that the bacterium is ingested from soil and water containing rotting organic matter. Photographed in South Africa | |
