Shoveler. Historical artwork of a male shoveler duck (Anas clypeata). This duck inhabits wetlands and inland waters across much of the northern hemisphere, and northern populations migrate south for the winter. The shoveler feeds mainly by filtering water through bristles on its bill, which allows it to capture small crustaceans, insect larvae and plant matter. In addition to this,it also eats snails, beetles and small fish. The shoveler may reach a length of over 50 centimetres. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935) | |
