Brown pelican. View of a brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) diving for fish. These large birds inhabit both the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean coastlines from North America to northern South America. They feed exclusively on fish, diving from the air (as seen here) and catching them in their large bills. Brown pelicans may reach a length of over 110 centimetres. They are extremely common in their range, and become so accustomed to human activity that they may even become tame. Birds from the northernmost parts of the range may migrate south for the winter.
