Grey-headed albatross (Diomedea chrysostoma) and its chick. Breeding pairs mate for life and both birds help raise a single chick every two years in a cliff top nest, feeding it on regurgitated food. A chick is raised for about six months, needing to be guarded from predators for the first 3 weeks, with both parents feeding it after that time and until it is ready to leave the nest. These are among the smallest albatrosses, with a wingspan of around 2 metres, soaring on the winds of the southern oceans to feed on fish and squid.
