Wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans) during a courtship ritual. This involves spreading their wings, waving their heads and rapping their bills together with braying calls. Pairs formed this way stay together for life. They nest on cliff tops and a single egg and chick is incubated and raised by both parents every 2 years. Wandering albatross wings can span 3 metres, allowing them to soar on the winds of the southern oceans and travel many hundreds of kilometres. They feed at night by reaching down as they float on the sea surface, mainly catching squid. Photographed on Bird Island,South Georgia, southern Atlantic Ocean | |
