Black-footed penguins (Spheniscus demersus) on a rocky coast. This penguin, also known as the jackass penguin due to its braying call, inhabits the coasts of South Africa and Namibia. It feeds on fish, crustaceans (such as crabs) and squid. It spends much of its time at sea in large groups. It is monogamous, and generally remains with the partner it found on reaching maturity. Colonies of black-footed penguins provide a good supply of guano (excrement),which is harvested and used as a fertiliser. It is threatened by human activities, such as overfishing.
