Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) sheltering three-week-old chicks. The males shelter the chicks against the cold by holding them on their feet and covering them with a fold of skin. Emperors are the only penguins to breed in the Antarctic over winter. The males incubate the egg, surviving the extreme cold by huddling in small groups. The females return from coastal waters as soon as the chick hatches. The parents feed the chick on regurgitated fish. The emperor is the largest penguin, standing around 115 centimetres tall and weighing 30 to 40 kilograms. Photographed at Dawson-Lambton Glacier,Antarctica | |
