Emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) sheltering its week-old chick. The male shelters the chick against the cold by holding it on his feet and covering it with a fold of skin. This picture was taken in August when the temperature was -40 degrees Celsius. Emperors are the only penguins to breed in the Antarctic over winter. The males incubate the egg, surviving the extreme cold by huddling in small groups. The females return from coastal waters as soon as the chick hatches. The parents feed the chick on regurgitated fish. The emperor is the largest penguin, standing around 115 centimetres tall and weighing 30 to 40 kilograms. Photographed in Antarctica | |
