Black-footed penguin (Spheniscus demersus) braying at dawn. This donkey-like call means Spheniscus sp. penguins are also known as "jackass penguins". The black-footed (or African) penguin feeds on fish, squid and crustaceans. It can travel 50 kilometres from its nesting ground to hunt, swimming at up to 7 kilometres per hour. Found only off the coast of South Africa,it is endangered due to competition with commercial fisheries and frequent oil spills. It inhabits rocky shores, making its nest from hardened guano. When it reaches maturity,it mates for life. Photographed at Simon's Town,South Africa | |
