Grass snake (Natrix natrix). This non-venomous snake lives in meadows,marshes and on the edge of rivers,streams and canals. It feeds on frogs,toads and newts. It has a forked tongue (not seen),which it uses as a sense organ to smell the presence of prey. N. natrix usually measures between 0.6 and 2 metres in length.
