Snake venom research. Researcher "milking" the venom from a Russell's viper (Daboia or Vipera russelli). The snake is prompted to bite a layer of cloth covering the glass container at lower left. Some venom (yellow) is seen in the bottom of the glass. The venom is used to help produce antivenom which can be given to cure victims of this snake's bite. Russell's viper is native to southeast Asia, and has a potent venom. It is an aggressive snake, and is one of the leading causes of snakebite in the area. Its venom is often fatal.
