Head of the ringed snake Natrix natrix. Sometimes called a "garden" snake for its wide distribution throughout Europe. This is a non venomous colubrid snake which lives commonly near water and feeds on frogs, toads, newts and fishes. It has enjoyed a good reputation in Europe since antiquity; in some countries it is considered lucky to find one of these "snakes with the golden crown on its head". This head ring, partly seen here,is formed by a distinct yellow collar at the rear of the head. The female Natrix natrix can reach 2 metres in length. When threatened they hiss, release stink gland secretions, and may "play dead" | |
