Adult slow worm (Anguis fragilis) on a log. The slow worm is not a worm but a legless lizard. It can grow to lengths of 50 centimetres. It is the most widely distributed European lizard, only being absent from the far north,Ireland and southern Spain. It inhabits meadows, woodland edges and gardens, feeding on slow-moving insects, slugs, spiders and worms. Like many lizards the slow worm is able to shed its tail, although it does not grow back fully. It hibernates from October to March. Photographed in June in Kent,UK | |
