A captive three toed skink,Chalcides chalcides, found in Southern Europe. This cylindrical snake- like animal grows to a length of about 42 cm. In this picture it is possible to see its small limbs which each have just three toes - hence the name. When this animal moves rapidly its limbs, which are not used, are pressed tight against the body. The upper side is olive or bronze in colour, with nine to eleven dark longitudinal stripes | |
