Dome-shelled Galapagos tortoise. These are a subspecies of the giant Galapagos tortoise (Geochelone elephantopus). The dome-shelled subspecies is found on the larger islands, which have more high wetlands. They feed on vegetation on the ground and have short necks and limbs. They are also the largest of the Galapagos tortoises, measuring up to 1.5 metres in length and weighing up to 300 kilograms. There used to be vast numbers of tortoises on these islands, but the arrival of humans led to a severe reduction in their numbers. Photographed on the Galapagos Islands | |
