Turtle hatchery. Ranger placing hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) eggs in an artificial nest in a protected hatchery. The eggs are relocated as soon as they are laid to protect them from being dug up by other turtles or monitor lizards. The hatchery is partially shaded to provide a variation in the temperature of the sand. This is important as sex determination in turtles is temperature dependent and so a constant temperature would lead to a majority of one of the sexes being born. The loss of nesting beaches and the effects of hunting and pollution have endangered some turtle species. Photographed in Turtle Island Marine Park,Pulau Gulisan,Sabah,Malaysia | |
