Protected hatchery for the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Turtles are wholly aquatic reptiles, the female only coming ashore to lay her eggs, usually on the beach where she was born. She digs a hole and buries the eggs under the sand. The hatchling turtles will emerge and crawl down to the sea. The loss of nesting beaches and the effects of hunting have endangered some turtle species. This wire fence is designed to protect the eggs from being damaged. Photographed in Lankayan,Malaysia | |
