Loggerhead turtle nesting

| Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting. The female loggerhead turtle comes to shore to lay approximately 120 eggs at intervals of between 3 & 6 years. She then leaves the nest and the young hatch some 60 days later. As juveniles they live in the open ocean but move to coastal waters as they reach maturity. The loggerhead turtle takes it name from its large head which houses powerful jaw muscles. These allow it to feed on crabs and molluscs.
