Toad. Coloured X-ray of a ventral view of a young toad,Bufo sp. Bones of the skeleton are adapted for the toad's way of life. A semi-circular jawbone gives the toad a wide gape for capturing prey with its tongue. Bones of the limbs are broad and strong for powerful jumping and swimming; forelimbs are attached to a fused shoulder girdle,to take the impact of landing after a jump. Three pelvic bones are also fused in order to act as a fixed pivot from which the powerful, long hindlegs can kick. Toes of the hindlimbs are especially elongated and webbed to assist in swimming. In this X-ray,the warty skin of the toad can be seen. Magnification: x1 at 6x7cm size | |
