Clark's anemonefish (Amphiprion clarkii) amongst the tentacles of a sea anemone. Anemonefish, also known as clown fish, live in association with anemones. Both partners benefit,so the association is termed mutualistic. Each species of anemonefish lives with a different species of anemone. Slime on the fish's skin prevents the anemone's stinging cells from damaging it. The fish sleep, hide from danger, eat, and lay their eggs between the poisonous tentacles. The protection offered by the anemone is exchanged for food brought by the anemonefish, and its cleaning abilities. Photographed off Kapalai,Malaysia | |
