Blue ribbon eel. Head of a blue ribbon eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita) emerging from rocks. This moray eel has large leafy appendages on its nose (orange). It is carnivorous, and the appendages are thought to mimic the tails of small fish, acting as a lure to attract other fish to within striking distance. The blue ribbon eel may reach a length of over a metre. It inhabits crevices in rocks and coral throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Photographed off Sabah,Malaysia | |
