Bluestriped snappers. View of a large school of bluestriped snapper fish (Lutjanus kasmira) by a coral reef. These fish are native to the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans, and are known to congregate in huge schools around coral reefs. They feed on smaller fish and crustaceans. Above the snapper school are several orbicular (or round-faced) batfish (Platax orbicularis). These fish may reach a depth of almost a metre due to their greatly-elongated anal and dorsal fins. They feed on shrimp and other small prey which they hunt around coral reefs. Photographed at Dhiffushi,in the Maldive Islands | |
