Left-eyed flounder. View of a left-eyed flounder (family Bothidae) on the sea bed. Flounders are about 35 cm long and weigh up to 1 kg. When born, the left-eyed flounder resembles many other fish, but as it matures its body flattens and its right eye migrates to the left side. The eye-less side becomes the fish's underside. The spotted appearance,as seen here,of the upper side gives it an excellent camouflage when resting on the sea floor; it can change its colour to some extent to match its surroundings. This flounder feeds on fish, crustaceans and octopus. They jump their unsuspecting prey from a hidden position. Photographed in Nova Scotia,Canada | |
