Unidentified species of Scorpion fish in the Red Sea. These fish have remarkable adaptations for camouflage. Many Scorpion fish species have strik- ing colours and patterns of marking, and reddish hues are present quite often,as seen here. Coral- like outgrowths on the skin add to this effect and make the fish almost invisible. Their behaviour is solitary and quiet. They wait for unsupecting prey and suddenly leap at it or create a suction by rapidly opening the mouth to draw the prey in. They have a wide mouth and broad head and poison glands at the base of the dorsal fin. Being so camouflaged they are extremely dangerous to swim- mers who may unwittingly stand on them | |
