Blue-spotted stingray (Taeniura lymma or lymna). This stingray,or fantail ray, inhabits the warm and shallow waters of the Indo-Pacific region, spending most of its time buried in the sand with only its eyes visible. It mainly eats shrimp and crabs. It has a poisonous barb (not seen) on its tail, which can inject a highly-toxic venom from a gland at its base. It uses this weapon not on its prey, but in defence against predators.
