Tasselled wobbegong shark. View of a tasselled wobbegong shark,Euchrossorhinus dasypogon (at lower centre),on the sea bed surrounded by cardinal fish (Apogon sp). This shark is coloured in order to camouflage itself against algae on the sea bed. The appendages around the head mimic sea plants, helping to camouflage the shark. Wobbegongs belong to the family of sharks known as carpet sharks (Orectolobidae). They inhabit warm shallow water in tropical and subtropical areas where they feed on crustaceans and small bony fish. Cardinal fish are common among coral reefs. Photographed on the Ningaloo Reef,Australia | |
