Medusa worm sea cucumbers (Synaptula lamperti) on the surface of a sponge. These worm-like sea cucumbers are echinoderms, relatives of the starfish. This species is only found in association with a host sponge. It uses its feathery head tentacles to sift organic matter from the surface of the sponge. It is thought that the sea cucumbers are dependent on some secretion from the sponge,as they cannot live without it. Photographed off Papua New Guinea | |
