Arrow worm. Macrophotograph of an arrow worm,Chaetognatha phylum,a type of marine mollusc found in plankton. The worm's head is at lower left and its tail at upper right. The arrow worm feeds on plankton, capturing other organisms with a set of claws in the head. They mostly live in the surface levels of the oceans of the world, though some species have adapted to a deeper existence. Arrow worms are an example of a "living fossil",having remained virtually unchanged for millions of years. There is little diversity in the Chaetognatha phylum, which only contains about fifty species split into seven genera. Magnification: x7 at 35mm size | |
