Pharaoh cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis) reproduction. Male pharaoh cuttlefish (bottom) protecting a female (top) while she lays her eggs. After copulation, the female cuttlefish lays around 200 eggs in small reef crevicies, which hatch a few months later. This cuttlefish feeds on small molluscs, crabs, shrimp and fish. It can change colour according to its surroundings by dilating or contracting pigment cells called chromatophores. This acts as a form of camouflage from predators and a form of communication to other cuttlefish. Photographed in the Andaman Sea,Thailand | |
