Giant clam (Tridacna sp.) surrounded by coral. The giant clam is the largest living bivalve mollusc. Shells of mature individuals can reach 1.5 metres in length. The giant clam is sessile (stationary) and is usually found in shallow water in tropical and sub-tropical seas. It feeds by filtering microscopic plants and animals (plankton) from the water, but obtains most of its food from photosynthetic symbiotic algae living in its tissues. Photographed in the Red Sea | |
