Mussel glue. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the byssus (glue threads) of a common mussel (Mytilus edulis). These threads are composed of a protein glue, which binds the mussel to rocks. The glue is water-resistant and stronger than epoxy resins. Most glues cannot bind wet surfaces, and the mussel protein could be used as a glue in the body and in underwater construction. This mussel is a sessile bivalve mollusc that inhabits coastal waters, where it filters tiny food particles from the water. Magnification: x81 at 6x7cm size | |
