Red palm mite (Raoiella indica) on a palm leaf, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The white structures are sensory hairs. This mite is an arachnid pest that infests a range of palms, including banana and coconut palms. Unlike other plant mites, the stylet (feeding part) of this species digs deeper into the plant tissue, causing more damage. The stylet (yellow) is seen emerging from the head at upper left, and has been inserted into a leaf stoma. More stomata (openings through which the leaf breathes and releases water vapour) are seen at upper right. This mite is an invasive species in the Caribbean, and is also spreading through the southern USA | |
