Lyme disease tick nymph. Macrophotograph of a nymph of the Lyme disease tick Ixodes ricinus,on human skin. This tick, the Lyme disease vector,is a blood-sucking human and animal parasite. A nymph is a sexually immature stage that occurs before adult size is reached. The nymph has four pairs of walking legs. It is only the adult female tick that sucks blood from humans, using her barbed mouthparts. Lyme disease occurs when the biting tick transmits the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium to humans. Lyme disease causes fever, muscle pain, and inflamed joints. Magnification: x1.3 at 35mm size | |
